Colloid Mill Specification Description and Technical Details
A colloid mill is a machine used to reduce the particle size of a solid suspended in a liquid, or to reduce the droplet size of a liquid suspended in another liquid. It operates by applying high levels of hydraulic shear to the process liquid. This equipment is commonly used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and chemical industries.
The basic principle of the colloid mill is that the mechanical disruption of particles is achieved through the shear force generated by high-speed rotation of the rotor-stator assembly. The material to be processed is fed into the mill and subjected to intense mechanical action which results in size reduction and dispersion.
Rotor-Stator Assembly
- Material: Stainless Steel (304/316L)
- Rotor Speed: Adjustable, typically 3000 – 18000 RPM
- Gap Adjustment: Manual or automated, allowing control over particle size distribution.
Motor
- Power: Typically ranges from 1.5 kW to 15 kW, depending on the model and application.
- Type: Electric, with options for variable frequency drive (VFD) to control speed.
- Voltage: Usually 220V/380V/440V, customizable based on regional standards.
Capacity
- Flow Rate: 1 to 10,000 liters per hour, depending on the viscosity of the processed material and the size of the mill.
- Batch Size: Ranges from laboratory-scale models processing small volumes to industrial models handling large production batches.
Materials of Construction
- Wetted Parts: High-grade stainless steel to ensure corrosion resistance and compatibility with a wide range of products.
- Seals: Food-grade mechanical seals or lip seals, depending on the application.
Operating Conditions
- Temperature Range: Suitable for operation from -20°C to 200°C, depending on the model and materials.
- Pressure: Can handle pressures up to 16 bar, specific to design and application.
Control System
- Automation: Available with PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems for automated operation and integration with existing process control systems.
- Monitoring: Real-time monitoring of temperature, pressure, and rotor speed with feedback control for process optimization.
Design Features
- Sanitary Design: CIP (Clean-In-Place) and SIP (Sterilize-In-Place) capabilities for applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
- Portability: Some models come with casters for easy movement and flexibility in the production environment.
- Safety Features: Overload protection, emergency stop buttons, and safety interlocks to ensure operator safety.
- Food Industry: Emulsifying sauces, creams, and dairy products.
- Pharmaceuticals: Homogenizing creams, ointments, and suspensions.
- Cosmetics: Producing lotions, gels, and emulsions.
- Chemicals: Creating stable dispersions and emulsions for various chemical processes.
- Ayurvedic Industries. Homogenizing creams, ointments, and suspensions.
